DREAMTONGUE is an exploration of the body and the multiple realms that coexist within it. There is the physical, metaphysical and spiritual. Through the constructed language of textiles, nature, movement and sound lie investigations that move through each realm of the body, as a way of transmuting pain and finding the body’s true essence.

Rust is a form of deterioration, it corrodes and breaks down elements through time. It is a technique I commonly use for dyeing, what makes rusting so unique to other natural dye processes is it does not need natural material in order to leave its mark. Any surface can be rusted. I think about trauma, how it leaves invisible marks on our body through time, that corrode and break parts of us down. Discarded textiles mirror the self, its worth, its shame, its shadow. Combined with rusting, a garment becomes the physical body. The pain body.

There was an exercise I did frequently in the last year during moments when I felt the boulder was too heavy to push. An exercise called “grounding” where you put your bare feet to the earth. Through it, earth sends electric charges that run through you, in turn the earth reconnecting you to it. The act of natural dyeing becomes the metaphor for this. By cleansing the discarded textiles in dye baths of plum leaves, madder root, turmeric, and indigo the life in them is regenerated, slowly absolving the scars. Stitching pieces together and creating wearables that revitalize self worth and channel change. Mending pieces together to show the acceptance of these scars from past traumas and past lives. Highlighting them and extracting on their uniqueness. Acceptance of the shadow, rising above it, light.

A pdf found its way to me during the last year, the title was called Dreamtongue a guide to empath awakening written by Jadoa Tai Alexander. The text outlines five stages of awakening towards metaphysical realities: Alpha, Beta, Theta, Delta and Gamma, each one represented in a color. Alpha is yellow, Beta is silver, Theta is red, Delta is blue and Gamma is purple. I decided to create five wearables, each phase represented, with the process of sewing together “pain body” pieces and dyeing them in the color of its corresponding phase. As the body holds such significance to this project, I was reminded of a connection from several years prior with a dancer from project where I was the costume designer. We’ve both been in off and on communication, waiting for the opportunity to work together. When this project arose, I knew immediately that Jobel would bring life to these pieces. Having worked on music and soundscapes as part of a duo over the last several years, I have also felt a longing to put together sonic arrangements on my own again, and envisioned interpreting each dream tongue phase through its own soundscape, adding another dimension to the project.

Together, Jobel and I will portray these five phases. Through color, movement and sound we work our way through each level, ultimately arriving at gamma. We reach towards the light and our spiritual body, hoping to find the spirit that lies in this core.
